This painting shows a black nanny cradling a white baby, a slave master holding a whip, slaves carrying cotton, and a Klansman overseeing a lynching. This reminds me of Beloved and how slavery plays a huge role in the lives of the characters. The woman and the baby she is holding remind me of Sethe and how involved she is with her children. She is a slave and has suffered physically and emotionally from that, and she tries to murder her children to save them from the horrors of the world. The connection to this painting is obviously slavery, and the physical and emotional toll it carries, but I think this picture can relate to all of the books we have read, because it focuses on the hardships, the struggles and the problems that you have to overcome to make it to the end of your dream.
